Jenisjoplin: the reinvention of identity

Abstract

In the Basque literature, there are few books that have a feminine protagonist and speak about the Basque conflict. It is for that reason that this articles main objective is to offer a literary analysis of Uxue Alberdis book called Jenisjoplin  (Susa, 2017), work that meet the characteristics mentioned above. The main topic of this book, that has had a very good reception from the critics, is the identity and its reinvention, and it is executed connected with the body and the sexuality. Likewise, it makes a jump to the Basque Country of the eighties and nineties, and among other things, speaks about militancy, armed struggle, dissent, class struggle, social exclusion, sex, suicide and drugs. This article makes an attempt to gather those topics that are addressed in the book, but besides, the sociopolitical context, the paratext, the space and characters are also analysed. The centrality that the body has in this novel has also been underlined in this article. Finally, it is defended that Alberdis book opens the way to create a new Basque national subject, that is to say, it brings a new national identity.
